Sprinkles

Still the best cupcakes I’ve ever eaten…which is a big call because before trying these I thought most cupcakes were of a similar standard! As well as the infamous Cupcake ATM, which I have to admit is pretty fun, you can also peruse the selection in store and choose based on looks. More my game! From its first store in Beverly Hills the Sprinkles cupcake craze has spread across the country and ice cream and cookies are now also on the menu. With so many options the only problem is deciding on your order…or delivery. And with catering also available, cupcake tower anyone, they’re the best treat to serve at your next event. Be sure to put them to the test if you find yourself near one of their twenty current locations!

Flatiron Building

One of my favourite buildings in this city, maybe because it reminds me of my favourite TV show, Friends, or simply because it’s so breathtakingly different. Completed in 1902 the Flatiron Building was one of the city’s tallest buildings at 20 floors high. It has since had an extra floor added and although these days it is merely an office building there’s no doubt it is a New York icon…and it has been since 1966 when it was designated a New York City Landmark. From the back it is unassuming and appears to be just another building, beautiful and grand but nothing out of the ordinary. The view from the front is quite the opposite though, and well worth visiting for a great tourist snap!

Washington D.C.

We made the most of our first long weekend in a while and took a bus to the nation’s capital. Washington D.C. surpassed our expectations with its beauty, large open spaces and multitude of grand buildings and monuments. Seeing The White House was definitely a highlight and the National Mall is not to be missed…covering 146 acres and housing The Capitol Building, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, war memorials and flanked by multiple museums, be prepared for some walking to see it all!

Tidal Basin is a scenic spot and provides a beautiful walk between the Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorials…especially in cherry blossom season which unfortunately we missed. Visiting neighbouring state, Virginia, to take in Arlington National Cemetery and the Kennedy’s final resting place was especially moving during Memorial Day weekend. And a last minute trip to Mount Vernon and the plantation home of George Washington was an unexpected highlight. Dating back to 1735 the mansion and it’s grounds give a real insight into life in the 18th century amongst breathtaking views and scenery.

Nathan’s Famous

We made it to Coney Island for the first time last weekend and it was buzzing. With thousands of runners and supporters gathered at the end of the Brooklyn Half Marathon we were lucky to make it to the front of the line at the infamous, or should I say famous…Nathan’s Famous. Widely declared as having the best hot dogs, I was sceptical, it’s a hot dog right! But these were definitely the best I’ve had so far.

Started with a small hot dog stand in Coney Island this landmark restaurant is about to celebrate its 100th anniversary. And with its produce currently sold in all 50 states and restaurants all over the world it’s easy to see why. They even run an annual 4th of July hot dog eating competition. These dogs are definitely worth a try!
